The Community Vocabulary
Community-led. Community-based. Community-centred. Community everything.
The word community carries enormous weight in development work. It can describe a place, a group, a network, an identity or simply the people an organisation wants to reach.
The problem begins when the word becomes a substitute for saying who actually participated and how. A programme can be called community-led while decisions remain elsewhere.
Good participation needs more than a label. It requires power, voice and meaningful influence. Instead of asking whether a project is community-centric, we should ask a simpler question: what decisions did the community actually make?
