Nonprofits can fill gaps, mobilise resources and help people navigate difficult systems. But their presence does not remove the need for functioning public institutions.
When NGOs become the default response to basic needs, responsibility can quietly shift away from the state. Crowdfunding can solve an immediate crisis. It cannot replace a public health system designed to prevent that crisis from becoming a personal fundraiser.
