Community Voices, But Only the Right Ones
We love community voices. Opinions are slightly harder to manage.
Development proposals often promise community participation. The language sounds good because listening to people affected by a programme should be basic practice.
The harder part begins when communities disagree with the organisation, challenge the plan or demand something outside the proposal. Participation becomes meaningful only when those opinions can actually influence decisions.
A community voice is not a decorative quote in a proposal. It is a source of power that can change what an organisation does. If we only want voices that confirm our plans, we are not really listening. We are collecting approval.
