Half the salary. No job security. Somehow still called a sector of changemakers.
The social sector talks constantly about dignity, livelihoods and decent work. Yet many people doing this work face salaries that lag behind other sectors, temporary contracts and uncertain futures.
The irony is particularly sharp when public officials are imagined watching NGO workers operate under those conditions. The work may be socially valuable, but that does not automatically make poor working conditions acceptable.
People should not have to choose between meaningful work and economic security. If we care about decent work for communities, we should also ask what decent work looks like for the people delivering it.
