If the money comes from one place and the work serves another, where does accountability sit?
Nonprofits often have several stakeholders: funders, boards, governments, employees, partners and the communities they work with. These groups can have very different expectations.
Funding relationships can make accountability especially complicated. The organisation may have to report carefully to the people who provide the money while also claiming to centre the people who experience the programme.
Being critical of nonprofits is not the same as dismissing their work. It is a way of asking whether resources, decisions and outcomes remain connected to the people the organisation says it serves.
