Funding Safety After Creating the Risk
The strange business of solving harms after helping create them.
AI safety funding can support important work on protecting children and young people. Research, safeguards and public-interest technology all need resources.
But the meme asks a harder question: what happens when the same technological systems creating new risks are being developed at enormous speed, while safety work is funded later as a response?
Prevention matters. Safety should not only arrive after harm becomes visible. The social sector has seen this pattern before: create the intervention first, then fund the safeguards. Sometimes the first investment should be understanding the risks.
